Physical Description: James has long dirty blonde hair that typically hangs in his eyes and down to his shoulders in the back. He puts it in a miniature ponytail while at work to keep it out of the way but the rest of the time lets it hang loose. He has bright, expressive blue eyes and a long face with narrow, angular nose ears and chin. He has a small, wiry build and tends to look dangerous a lot of the time.
At the job James just started at the apothecary, he is required to wear plain gray robes and dragonhide work boots. When on the stage for solo shows, he wears jeans, button up shirts, and flip flops. When on stage for “” he wears jeans, band shirts, and ragged sneakers, and the rest of the time he tends to wear jeans flip flops, and shirts with witty or sarcastic messages printed on them.
The right side of his lower lip is pierced, and the ring that is usually in it is shaped like a boomerang. His left nipple is pierced, and generally has a shark tooth dangling from a tiny chain. He has a sleeve tattoo of green ivy wrapping around his right arm from elbow to wrist. The leaves close to his wrist have dates in them, while the leaves closer to his elbow are empty, waiting to be filled with dates that haven’t happened yet. There is also a surfboard with Kaylee written in it in cursive tattooed over his heart.
Personality Description: The ideas at the core of James’s personality are music and family. Since he doesn’t have a lot of family left, both of these are centered around his band, going as far as him living with the singer and drummer, dating the singer, and being sort of involved with the drummer. He also has a small circle of close friends from school and the music scene that are like family and treated just as closely.
Though he is devoted to all of these people, he is also quiet and reserved, though less with them. Around strangers if he is not performing, James is almost completely silent, ensuring that he doesn’t have to open up the pain inside at all. He also turns to alcohol and cigarettes regularly, and stronger drugs occasionally, to allow himself to live a normal life and not be trapped inside his head all the time. He has also been known to sample some of his drummers more exotic drugs to help in the writing process.
In school he played quidditch (when he was sober enough to be an asset on the field and not a hindrance), but that was really more to kill time than out of any love of sport. He is most confident working with potions, herbs, and anything else that involves subtlety, rather than having to use his wand and do that sort of magic. He is better with animals than most people, also, so that the only N.E.W.T.s he got in school were Potions, Herbology, Astronomy, Care of Magical Creatures, History of Magic.
History: James was born in Adelaide, Australia, to Michael, a muggle American who had moved down under to work as a wildlife photographer, usually helping scientists to document ocean life, and Rachel, a British witch who ran away from home in response to a traumatic situation and took up life as a muggle, working as the clerk in a surf shop. They originally met when the shopkeeper had no time to give Michael longboard lessons and asked Rachel to handle it.
James was their second child, as Kaylee was born almost five years previously. They lived a quiet, happy life, until Kaylee had a surfing accident when she was 14, James was 9, and their younger brother Marshall was 6. In her rush to try and save her daughter, Rachel tried to use magic to clear the water from her lungs, but it was too late and Kaylee died anyway. Michael freaked out at the magic, and fearing for her safety, Rachel took the two kids and left.
Over the next year and a half, Rachel nearly killed herself with alcohol and drugs, to the point that her friends even sought out Michael, but he wanted nothing to do with the boys he saw as dangerous freaks. Bursts of accidental magic when she was out of her mind intoxicated became frequent for Rachel, and one night in early spring a few months before James was set to start school, she managed to completely destroy the flat they lived in, killing herself and putting Marshall into a magical coma which he did not come out of for over two years.
Rachel’s sister took custody of the boys and moved them to England, where James started at Hogwarts and Marshall resided at St. Mungo’s, where Aunt Crystal worked as an assistant healer, though in a different ward than her new dependent. James was a quiet loner at first and struggled in school and away from everything he had known in Australia.
Things changed near the end of his second year, as his brother was allowed to go home, seemingly fully recovered, only to run away at the first opportunity he got. No one even remotely related to James has seen him since and the current whereabouts of the would-be 15 year old are unknown.
This set off a change in James and he became a little bit wilder, drinking and smoking to not have to think. He also took up guitar and began pouring his feelings into songs, though he got even worse in his studies, especially anything involving his wand. He ran with an older crowd for the next three years and is still friends with many of them, and with them he learned to drink, smoke, and view the world through the lens he does now.
As he started his sixth year, he had begun playing solo gigs for cigarette and booze money, and most of that crowd had graduated. At this point he met seventh years Ezzy Jones and Fina Owens and became close with them. He spent much of the year teaching her to play the drums, then learning songs and writing songs to utilize Fina’s impressive voice and stage presence, though they had to wait until the following summer to find their bassist, a squib whose name they don’t actually know, but who goes by Daryl Fingers. He then finished school, though his heart wasn’t really in it, and they are now ready to focus on adding the band to the solo shows that he has already been performing.
Additional Details: Wand is Ash and Unicorn tail hair, ten inches fairly firm. He has a Beachwood acoustic guitar, which is old and worn and which he has named Kay and a bright blue electric guitar which is newer and practically spotless and which is named Lee. Dating Fina Owens seriously and Ezzy Jones less seriously. Speaks occasionally to his Aunt Crystal. Tried a few times in recent years to reconnect with his father, who is now a fashion photographer based in New York, but has now given up. Still hopes to one day find and reconnect with his younger brother.
